Originally from south Africa, I moved to Australia in 1977 with my English husband Ian. Prior to this I had lived in England for several years where I first became aware of the art of calligraphy.
I settled in the coastal city of Geelong, and after attending local community classes in calligraphy in the late 80s, I enrolled into the certificate of calligraphy at the Melbourne College of Decoration where I graduated in 1992.
My desire to learn more led me to Jill Colebatch and the For The Love of Letters course in 1994 and 1995 where I feel I matured greatly as a calligrapher under expert guidance. Since then I have been lucky enough to continue learning with Jill and fellow students, who remain a constant source of inspiration and support to me.
I have been a member of the Calligraphy Society of Victoria for many years. While I have benefited a great deal from the many workshops they have held over the years, recently I have had the honour of conducting some myself on the art of Decorated Letters.
While I love all forms of lettering - traditional and contemporary, decorated letters hold a special place in my heart. I love all decorated letters from Romanesque to Modern day. I have always had a fascination for variegated background patterns - commonly known as diapers. Many of these letters can be seen in the Visconti Hours. I have shown some examples of letters with geometric diapers in my gallery. However, you will have to imagine the gold as that unfortunately does not come through over the computer.
